International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA)

Transforming agricultural research findings into action

ICARDA is a CGIAR Center delivering innovative, science-based solutions for dryland communities in 50 countries. For over 20 years, Scriptoria has supported ICARDA with a range of strategic and creative communications services.

Timeframe: 2021–Present

Our approach

Scriptoria provides high-quality content development and editorial services and has developed key publications such as ICARDA’s annual report. In 2018, we led a major brand refresh that introduced a new logo and visual identity guidelines. More recently, we developed a landing page for CGIAR’s 2030 Global Strategy for Resilient Drylands and a webpage for a major project on red palm weevil.

Impact

Our support has enhanced ICARDA’s visibility and strengthened engagement with its work by transforming research into clear, accurate and accessible communications materials.

Invest Salone

Highlighting Sierra Leone’s investment potential

Invest Salone is a £27 million UK international development-funded programme that works to encourage investment, generate exports, create jobs and diversify key sectors in Sierra Leone. As a trusted communications partner, we helped shape and deliver the programme’s communications strategy to support sustainable behaviour change in inclusive business practices.

Timeframe: 2019–Present

Our approach

Scriptoria first created the programme’s logo and visual identity, as well as a website and resource hub to easily share valuable resources with target audiences. We regularly produce high-quality content including reports, case studies, videos, animations and infographics. We also manage Invest Salone’s social media channels to support strategic engagement and visibility.

Impact

Our ongoing support has strengthened Invest Salone’s visibility and reach, showcased impact, and enhanced the programme’s influence in Sierra Leone and beyond.

Cooperation in International Waters in Africa (CIWA)

Aligning stakeholders for cooperative water management

CIWA assists riparian governments in sub-Saharan Africa in unlocking the potential for sustainable, climate-resilient growth by addressing constraints to cooperative water resources management and development. Scriptoria has been a trusted communications partner for this US$130 million World Bank-managed programme for the past decade.

Timeframe: 2015–Present

Our approach

Scriptoria designed, built and maintains CIWA’s bilingual website, including a resource library with numerous publications and advanced filtering. We support the CIWA team with branding, SEO and analytics services, and content management system training. In addition, we have created digital annual reports, a 10-year anniversary microsite and a hub for male champions for women’s empowerment in the transboundary water sector.

Impact

Our work has strengthened CIWA’s digital presence and accessibility, ensured consistent, high-quality communications across platforms and helped engage stakeholders while highlighting the programme’s long-term impact.

Just Rural Transition (JRT)

Forging partnerships for sustainable food systems

The JRT initiative, a US$9 million programme, brought together food producers, governments, businesses, investors, civil society and rural and Indigenous peoples to champion equitable, sustainable solutions to food systems challenges. Scriptoria partnered with JRT to provide strategic communications, campaign, policy and storytelling services.

Timeframe: 2022–2025

Our approach

Scriptoria developed and implemented a communications and media strategy for JRT from 2022 to 2023, including developing policy briefs, opinion pieces and digital content. We also supported FCDO and the World Bank to produce case study compendiums for both COP27 and COP28. In 2025, we created a talking-heads video highlighting the need for all voices to be heard in a just transition.

Impact

We supported major, successful campaigns around COP27 – increasing JRT’s visibility and gaining new, high-profile followers on social media – and the launch of 10 principles for a just transition to sustainable food systems.

CGIAR Initiative on NEXUS Gains

Influencing policy in global resource management

NEXUS Gains aimed to improve the integrated management of resources across the water–energy–food–environment (WEFE) nexus to achieve inclusive, sustainable development. It operated across five transboundary river basins with a value of US$20 million. Building on our work with the CGIAR Research Program on Water, Land and Ecosystems, Scriptoria led communications for NEXUS Gains to drive engagement, amplify research and enhance policy influence.

Timeframe: 2022–2024

Our approach

Scriptoria developed and implemented a communications strategy for the initiative, which included promoting solutions through digital and social media content, and producing a successful webinar series. We also helped researchers to translate their work into accessible materials including learning modules, blogs and impact stories.

Impact

Our work raised awareness of decision-support tools to help governments and investors address trade-offs and synergies across interlocking sectors. It also helped to promote nexus solutions at key global events such as the United Nations climate change conferences (COPs).

Climate Resilient Infrastructure Development Facility (CRIDF)

Building a knowledge legacy in Southern Africa

Originally funded by UK International Development, CRIDF was a £31 million programme that worked to provide long-term solutions to water issues affecting communities in Southern Africa. Scriptoria was the lead communications partner for CRIDF from its second phase onwards – developing, implementing and monitoring the programme’s communications strategy.

Timeframe: 2017–2023

Our approach

Scriptoria developed and managed a new website and resource centre, and produced a wide range of knowledge products, working closely with the CRIDF team to generate ideas for content. We also managed CRIDF’s social media accounts; supported campaigns and events; and created digital content, infographics, videos and animations.

Impact

In CRIDF’s final year, we helped to build a legacy for the programme, including developing a thought piece demonstrating lessons learned.

Tropical Legumes

Disseminating research on climate-resistant crops

The Tropical Legumes projects, a US$67 million series of initiatives, operating in 15 countries and funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, helped to develop, produce and distribute high-yielding, climate-resilient food legume varieties to millions of farmers in drought-prone regions of South Asia and sub-Saharan Africa. Scriptoria supported Tropical Legumes III in communicating 12 years of impact.

Timeframe: 2020–2021

Our approach

Scriptoria conceptualised, designed and built the Tropical Legumes Hub – a legacy website featuring an interactive map, fully searchable library including 100s of resources from across the projects, and a data hub visualising seed production and survey data. The hub brought together diverse information tailored for donors, policymakers, researchers and general audiences.

Impact

Our work ensured that key data and resources remained accessible and impactful beyond the project’s close, and created a lasting digital legacy to support ongoing research and policy development.
