Biomedical companies: Course examples

The ability to write quickly and efficiently is a vital part of any really successful scientific career. Below are just a few examples of the writing courses we’ve given to biomedical companies over the years.

AstraZeneca (2011–present)

Scriptoria’s Training team gives regular scientific journal article writing courses for the multinational pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca at their bases in Sweden and the UK. The courses focus on teaching biomedical researchers how to write clearly and succinctly for journals, so that AstraZeneca can better disseminate the results from its extensive research and development operations.

We have also started giving proposal writing courses at their new site in Cambridge, UK.

“The training course was very much appreciated and so were the two trainers. A very good mixture between lectures and exercises to keep us all alert and creative.”

Binding Site (2013–present)

So far, we have taught two courses for Binding Site – an inspiring specialist protein company that works to improve the diagnosis of certain cancers and immune disorders.

The first workshop taught scientific journal article writing to a group of their staff at their research facility in Birmingham, and the second gave in-depth writing training and feedback to a select group of three science communicators from the company.

“A really excellent course, with plenty of time to discuss particular issues that were relevant to our … book project. Very valuable to have feedback from both trainers on our individual writing styles.”

Pfizer (2010–present)

With a turnover of more than US$50 billion, the pharmaceutical giant Pfizer only works with the best service providers. Since 2010 we have been providing repeat courses on journal article writing for teams at Pfizer’s New York headquarters and their UK-based campuses in order to boost the number of publications they produce each year.

The participants have included very senior cohorts of researchers, including some of the top HIV/AIDS vaccine experts in the world. Feedback has, as usual, been excellent.

“A brief note to reflect on the ‘Writing Journal Articles’ training course delivered to my group by Scriptoria. This 1-day event proved to be a well balanced combination of high level advice and practical tips that have greatly enhanced colleagues aspirations and skills for publishing more often the science of their day-to-day job. Interactive, fun and to the point…I would strongly recommend this training course.”

Vertex (2012–2013)

This global biotechnology company first called us in to develop the writing capabilities of its research and development staff at its base in the UK.

Vertex focuses on discovering innovative new treatments for serious diseases such as cystic fibrosis. Our expert trainers were brought in to ensure that Vertex’s world-leading research is effectively documented both in internal reports and in high-impact, international journals.

Barcelona Biomedical Research Park (2009–2011)

Between 2009 and 2011, our trainers taught a series of one-day scientific writing courses for researchers at the Barcelona Biomedical Research Park (PRBB) in Spain. These wide-ranging, interactive courses involved Scriptoria’s trainers reviewing participants’ work to help them overcome specific problems.

NIBSC – National Institute for Biological Standards and Control (2008)

In 2008, Scriptoria delivered a two-day training course on aspects of scientific writing to 20 staff at the National Institute for Biological Standards and Control (NIBSC). The course was praised for the lively, interactive learning environment our trainers created.

The Institute, part of the Health Protection Agency (HPA), assures the quality of biological medicines, such as the flu vaccines that save so many lives each year.

Advanced Bionics (2006–2008)

Advanced Bionics (a world leader in the development of neurostimulation implants) asked Scriptoria to provide senior researchers with an intensive one-day course to improve their journal article writing skills.

The challenge we faced was to improve the writing of a small group of expert researchers who were already producing high-quality work. By working closely with the participants and providing a series of very challenging exercises, we helped the participants identify where their own work could be improved and how they could most clearly communicate their results.

Novartis Pharmaceuticals (2006)

Employing over 99,000 people worldwide and with offices in over 140 countries, Novartis is one of the largest pharmaceutical companies in the world. Large corporations like this can afford to choose their suppliers based on quality – not cost.

We were flattered, therefore, when after assessing several different companies, Novartis chose to fly Scriptoria’s trainers to Venice to deliver a special 3-hour writing seminar to their top young researchers.
